Gambling Addiction

http://www.addictionsearch.com/treatment_articles/article/compulsive-gambling-addiction-and-treatment_17.html

Is gambling a physical or psychological addiction? Why do addicts feel the need to continue to gamble even after they have lost everything? Who are the main people at risk to get addicted to gambling? If there is no scientific reasoning behind the addiction then can it technically be classified as an addiction? Are people who are addicted to drugs and alcohol more likely to become addicted to gambling also?

Is it the casinos responsibility to cut players off, or should it be up to the gambler to know when it is time to quit? Should gambling laws become more strict in certain states to limit the increase in the addiction? Without casinos would addicts still find ways to gamble? How would a gambling addict recover from his disease? Should casinos limit the number of alcoholic drinks they serve to the customers?

  1. Gambling is a psychological addiction. No matter how much money people lose through gambling or how many people the gambler has hurt, gamblers almost never seem to want to stop gambling. People that have addictive personalities are obviously very susceptible to many addictions, and gambling is one of these. I think that if someone has the potential to be a gambling addict, than the odds of the same gambler having an alcohol or drug addiction is very possible too. I am also a firm believer that casinos should try and be on the gambler's side, and cut them off at some point or kick them out. Since gamblers are addicted, they have problems with quitting, which is why the casinos and casino employees should help them out. Yes, they're making so much money off these helpless gamblers, but that shouldn't change anything.

  2. Gambling is a psychological addiction because there is no chemical dependency and is in a person's mind. They reason people keep gambling even after losing everything is because they feel as though they still have a chance to win and that they need to win in order to get everything back. That is the actual addiction itself because they get so wrapped up in thinking they are going to win so much and that causes the people to recieve the addiction. I think that people with greedy persoalities or people whom are aroud places that encourage gambling are more likely to become addicted to it.
The casinos definitely have a role in people becoming addicted so, they should put in a little effort to make sure it never gets too out of hand. However, a person should be able to have a balance between whats good for a little fun and what is unexceptable. There are of course gambling that occur outside of casinos, causing casinos to not be soley at fault for gambling addictions. The only way a gambler can stop this addiciton is by simply stopping it cold turkey and trying to find better ways to make money and live a better life.

  3. I think that gambling is a psychological addiction because in the addicts mind they think that one day they will win all of their money back. Addicts continue to gamble at all costs because they believe that they will win more money in the end. Men in their 20's or 30's are at a higher risk for gambling problems as well as older women. This is probably true due to the onset of a midlife crisis. These people are looking for something more meaningful in their lives, and gambling can fill that need. I think a gambling addiction can definitely be considered a true addiction because it is psychological. Someone with this problem doesn't want to lose all their money but they do because of their psychological problem. I think that someone addicted to drugs or alcohol can easily become addicted to gambling as well. Drugs and alcohol are both depressants so if the addicts starts to gamble when they are depressed it can easily start a gambling addiction. Gambling is also a depressant so it will only add to a depressive life for the addict.
I think it would nice if casinos could cut off the addicted gambler but I don't think it's their job to. It would be very difficult to tell if someone is really addicted to gambling so it wouldn't be good if casinos went around and cut off everybody. For example if someone had a shopping addiction the store wouldn't cut them off because it's good for business. So a casino would never cut off a gambler because the gambler is helping their business. Gambling laws could be more strict in certain areas but I still believe that people would be able to find ways to gamble without casinos. A gambling addiction is very difficult to come back from but there are specific groups and programs that deal with gambling addictions. Serving alcohol in casinos isn't a good idea because it is a depressant, and the last thing a gambling addict needs is alcohol when they are losing money. But then again casinos would never stop serving alcohol because it is so good for business. Gambling is a serious addiction and should be treated as such.

  4. I think that gambling is a psychological addiction because there really is not an physical benefits of gambling, I think they do it for the rush of excitement, so to them it really does not matter whether they win or lose as long as they get that feel of risk and reward. I do not believe they do it for the money because a rational person would understand gambling is very risky and it’s a lot safer to invest your money in other things. I believe they feel the need to gamble even after they have lost everything because it’s the adrenaline rush they are after, not money. Uneducated individual s are the highest risk for gambling addiction because they see it as their only way to make a lot of money and change how they live. Regardless whether or not there is any scientific proof you can be addicted to almost anything, there just need to be signs of an addiction. I believe there could be a correlation between the two addictions but typically money could be a constraint to which addiction the individual chooses because they may not have the funds to support both a drug and gambling addiction.

Morally casinos should be responsible for cutting off addicts but it just would not make good business sense because addicts tend to be their best customers. Also the gambler should be held responsible for their actions because they choose to take the risk and sometimes you just have to learn when it is time to cut your self off from your addiction. If gambling laws were stricter then there would still be gambling addicts, they would just find other ways to feed their gambling addiction. Also gambling tends to be heavily taxed by states so it brings in a lot of revenue for the government, which is another reason why I believe gambling laws should not be heavily restricted. Even without casinos people would find other ways to gamble such as betting on sports games, horse races and basically anything activity that has a winner. Unfortunately it seems that the only way for an addict to start the recovery process is to hit rock bottom and in the case of the gambling addict that means losing everything. Once again that is part of the way casinos make their money, so it would just be bad business sense if they were to limit the number of drinks an individual could purchase and people could also come into the casino already intoxicated.

  5. I think gambling is a psychological addiction, and even when addicts have lost everything they always have the hope and chance to win it all back. Since there is always that hope then they never stop trying. The main people at risk for gambling addiction would be people at low economic stature because they want to win big. I don’t believe it can actually technologically be classified as an addiction because there is no chemical component. People already addicted to drugs and alcohol, probably have a higher risk of gambling addiction because they are often associated. It is not the casinos job to cut off players, they should know on their own and the casino is just making more money for it. Addicts will always find ways to their addition whether there are casinos or not. An addict would recover by withdrawing itself from the situation.

  6. Gambling is a physiological addiction because they believe they are one fay going to benefit from it. They continue to gamble because it's an addiction they don't have the strength to stop. People who are vulnerable to gambling are people who enjoy the thrill of losing everything in one bet. I think it can be classified as an addiction because it makes people lose everything yet they continue to gamble. They are more likely to be addicted to gambling because when they do drugs and drink, dopamine makes them more prune to becoming an addict. The gamblers know the risk they're taking when they gamble so it is not the casinos responsibility. I think laws are meant to be broken so even if they try to enforce gambling laws people will find a way around them. With no casinos, people would gamble underground to fuel their addiction. To recover they can find therapy and support groups just like any other addiction. They shouldn't limit the number of alcoholic drinks they serve because it is just like a bar and the casinos main goal is to make a profit.

  7. I believe that gambling is a psychological addiction. When the addict has gambled away all their money, they still have that urge to get their "fix." They'd believe that their next shot was going to be their lucky break. This is all a mind game with their own self conscious. It can definitely be classified as an addiction. Someone who has a problem with gambling will truly have an addiction. It's the same concept as sex addiction or any other addiction. A certain action or substance hits that euphoric spot in the brain and causes it to fire making that urge for the fix that much greater. I believe, that unless the casino doesn't want large debts from their customers that they cannot handle, that it should be the gambler's responsibility to cut themselves off. Obviously the casino is trying to run a business, therefore they aren't going to turn away paying customers. This makes it the gamblers' responsibility to quit the betting. I believe that casinos should help take care of their customers in the way that they make sure a belligerent drunk isn't betting too much on a game. You should almost have to be able to know your customer and be able to care for them. I do believe that casinos should limit the number of alcoholic beverages served to a certain person.

  8. Gambling is a psychological addiction because as the article says, they are addicted to the feeling they get when they win, the pain involved in losing, and the stress that comes from being in between the two. I think those who live close to casino's or who have money to blow may be more susceptible to gambling addiction. This can be classified as an addiction because chemically it makes a difference in what is going on to the person. It also effects life of the person and their loved ones. If the addict cannot stop, it's not only him he is affecting, it's his family.

I don't believe it is the fault of the casino for the addiction to gambling. It has to be in the person's power to stop, not the casino. I think laws still won't make a difference because regardless if there is a casino nearby or not, those with the addiction will surely find a way to appease the addiction. For instance, instead of going to the casino, the addict could begin to bet on horses at a horse race. It is possible that addiction to other things may lead to addiction to gambling. Thus, maybe alcohol should be limited for people at casinos. However, this argues that it is up to the person to stop their addiction, not the casino. Addiction tend to link together so I can see why this would be something to consider.

  9. From my point of view, gambling is a kind of psychological addiction. Because of gambling is different from drug, and gambling can only cause the addiction in mental. I think the reason that addicts are continue to gambling though the loose money is because that they want to earn those money back, or they are excited and can’t control their selves. The main risk that people are addicted to gambling is a absolutely loosing money, and people who addicted to gamble are also have a hard time to control their selves. Gambling is different to cigarette, they can even cause more serious than drugs. I think for those people who are addicted to drugs are also easily to addicted to gambling because the have less ability to control their selves.

I think it is important for casinos to let gamblers to know when it is time to quit. By this method, gamblers may not spend so much money on gambling. I think the law also should be stricter since gambling is already become a kind of addiction. It is important for government and society to help those gamblers to get rid of this kind of addiction. If there is no casino, gamblers would find a place to gamble, but the process would be hard. So it is useful for casinos to limit gambling. I think the method of limiting alcoholic drinkers is also helpful because people always easily to make some mistakes when they get drunk.
