Eating Dryer Sheets and Being an Adult Baby

Part 1

Part 2

Is there a difference between being addicted to dryer sheets and being addicted to drugs and alcohol? Does the fact that fewer people are addicted to dryer sheets makes it a taboo? She is essentially doing things that smokers do; putting carcinogens in her body and using it to relieve stress. Is her addiction psychological or physical? Could there actually be chemicals in the dryer sheets that decrease her stress? Is it easier for her to seek treatment because she realize that it's a major problem?

Considering the rarity of dressing like a baby, do you think it's an addiction or a mental disorder? Do various events in her life, being bullied and being transgender, trigger the behavior? Why would she use something that is stressful as a coping mechanism for other problems in her life? Is she doing more harm than good dressing as a baby? Is the lack of experience of being a girl in her childhood a logical justification for her behavior? Do you think she will ever stop dressing as a baby?

  1. I think there is a slight difference in being addicted to drugs and alcohol compared to an addiction to dryer sheets. The addiction to dryer sheets seemed to be more about mental conflict and self-esteem issues than physical addiction and dependence to a certain substance. I would say that because eating dryer sheets is such a unique addiction, it does seem to be more of an unacceptable unsocially acceptable behavior. According to her explanations, the doctor, and psychologists opinions, the addiction seems to be a more psychologically related problem. According to her, the taste of some of the chemicals in the dryer sheets help her relax. I dont believe there is a specific chemical in the dryer sheets that literally decreases stress in general. Due to the fact that she does realize the severity of her addiction she is more willing and even set on seeking help and treatment to stop her addiction.

I believe the addiction to dressing like a baby is most entirely a mental function, therefore the addiction becomes a mental disorder. I'm sure all the stressors and events that have taken place in her life contribute to her reasoning for having the addiction. I dont think she finds dressing like a baby to be very stressful, in face i would assume she dresses like baby in order to relax and cope with her stress in general. I dont know that she is doing any harm dressing as a baby, perhaps, financially constantly buying diapers and accessories is financially depressing. It also may not be whats considered typically mentally healthy to continue with the addiction. The lack of experience of being a girl as a child may be a logical justification for her behavior to her personally. After watching the episode she seems determined that her addiction does no harm and therefore does not want to stop.

  2. The addiction to eating dryer sheets seems weird but I can see that smelling them led to the curiosity of tasting them. I also think her bringing up that she saw her mother do it too was really important to trying to understand where she gets it from. I think it was a really good thing that she was able to identify it as a problem and sought help for it. I don't see it as any different than smoking cigarettes though. Yes, it may seem more odd but it essentially doing the same thing. She uses it as a stress reliever just as a smoker would.

The adult baby seemed totally bizarre to me. I definitely see it as a mental disorder and must come from her childhood. I think that the fact that she is transgender has a lot to do with her behavior. I think that it is a much deeper concern than just her acting like a baby. There has to be a lot of mental issues and childhood problems involved. I think its crazy that she spends all that money on acting like a baby and that she actually wears diapers. That totally baffles me. However, I don't feel like she will ever stop acting that way. She seems to be totally content with her life as it is.

  4. I think there is a difference between an addiction to dryer sheets and an addiction to drugs an alcohol. There seems to be a a difference in the connotation of the severity of each addiction. Since society never hears about people eating dryer sheets, i think it's played off more and people don't think it's that big of a deal. I do believe that it is a taboo though. It's such a unique adiction and so abnormal as opposed to drugs and alcohol. Also, there are probably chemicals in the dryere sheets that harm her body. Because she's putting her body in harm, her body probably naturally releases chemicals itself which makes her addicted to eating dryer sheets.

As far as dressing like a baby, there is no way I think that's an addiction. It might be an infatuation or something, but there is nothing prevelant there that would make me believe it was actually a true addiction. I definitely think that certain events have an impact on her dressing like that. Wearing baby closes and acting like a baby probably gives her a sense of comfort and protection and may be her way of coping with past things. It may have to do with her not being a girl as a child, but i think it has more to do with all of the troubles she's been through. Lastly, I think eventually once she gets the help she needs mentally that she will stop dressing as a child. It will probably be when she comes to terms with her past and feels like she's ready to maybe actually mature.
