Ice Cream Addiction?

http://bodyodd.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/02/23/10480896-can-you-get-addicted-to-ice-cream-maybe-study-shows

There is always the argument between something being chemically addictive and being addictive in the sense that with it comes addiction-like cravings and feelings. Would you say that it has a chemical dependence tied into it or that because of the addiction like feelings, it just seems like an addiction? Most addictions come with negative consequences. If it were classified as an addiction, what negative things could come along with it? What positive things could come with an ice cream addiction except for the obvious pleasure you get while eating it? Do you think an ice cream addiction could harm anyone close to the addict like that of a drug or alcohol addiction? Scientists say "as far as the brain’s circuitry is concerned, pleasure is pleasure." Does this mean that anything pleasurable has the potential to become addictive? If it is true like some scientists say, that means that pretty much anything is capable of becoming addictive. What would you say is the line between what is an addiction and what is not? Is it about how harmful something is, or something else completely?

  1. According to the research mentioned in the article, ice cream, and other foods, can have "hyper-rewarding addictive like properties. In the case of ice cream it seems that instead of being "chemically" addictive, the addictive-like behavior comes from the need to have increasing amount of ice cream in order to enjoy it as much as it had been previously. Negative consequences that could become associated with an addiction to ice cream could be becoming overweight or obese. The financial aspect of having to continually purchase ice cream is negative. Ice cream contains a lot of sugar, and eating too much simply isn't healthy for the body. I'm not sure what positive things could come of eating and ice cream addiction, perhaps there is some calcium within ice cream that is healthy for the body. Economically, spending money on ice cream all the time could potentially help out the industry.

Eating ice cream should not impair the mind or physical bodily functions, therefore and addition shouldn't physically have any affects to those surrounding the addict. However, financially if a parent or spouse is constantly having to purchase ice cream or if friends and family are losing money because of how much is spent on ice cream, that could effect others.

According to the quote "Scientists say, as far as the brain’s circuitry is concerned, pleasure is pleasure;" I believe whats referenced is the ability for anything pleasurable to have to the potential to included addiction-like cravings or behavior. The line between what is addictive and what isnt, depends on how addiction is classified. I would say anything that produces addict-like symptoms could technically be called an addiction, anything short of that would not be an addiction.

  2. I really don't think someone can be addicted to ice cream. I mean, someone may like it a whole lot and choose to eat it often and in large quantities but that's just because they enjoy it. I don't really think that ice cream has addictive chemical components, it is just a sweet that people like to eat. If someone chooses to eat too much of it, they will probably start to see negative consequences such as weight gain or even something more serious like diabetes. I think ice cream is just a craving and and something that people with a sweet tooth may choose to over-consume. I think that the cost of ice cream over time would also start to take a toll on an individual. It can definitely get costly. I just don't think that ice cream can be seen as an addiction.

  4. Somebody couldn't really be chemically addicted to ice cream. I mean, sure there are reasons why people love to eat it and eat it a lot, but I'm not so sure they can be classified as addicted. People say all the time "I'm so addicted to (some type of food)" but that doesn't necessarily mean that they are actually addicted to it, it just may be one of their favorite foods. Obesity and the fact of not getting enough of the nutrients your body needs because you are eating ice cream when you should be eating fruits and vegetables. However, if you eat it as dessert after eating the nutrients you need and you stay active, it shouldn't really have too many negative effects. I wouldn't say that there are really any positive things besides being able to taste the different flavors of ice cream and get to try different various things in doing so.
To place this as an addiction depends on a somebody's personal opinion so, it can be really hard to say whether or not anything that is pleasurable is an addiction. There are so many things out there that would be considered an addiction and pretty much everythign would be able to find a way to be classified as an addiction. I think the line that defines whether something or not is an addiction is if it stops you in anyway from living your life to the fulliest.

  5. I think that anything can become addictive, but the question is when does an addiction become harmful? Ice cream is like any other food and can be addictive and turn into something more dangerous like Binge Eating Disorder. Negative consequences can come from any addiction, even something that seems as harmless as ice cream. Over eating can cause eating disorders, unhealthy weight gain, and even diabetes. Anything can become a harmful addiction if it is over used. Although there are negative effects to an ice cream addiction there can also be some positive effects. Besides enjoying your ice cream, it can also relieve stress. I think that any addiction can turn into something more dangerous. Someone with an addictive personality can turn towards ice cream, once the pleasure of the ice cream decreases the addict can turn to a more dangerous addiction. Having too much of anything can be bad and turn into an deadly addiction. After something starts to effect your daily life in a negative way is when it turns into a harmful addiction. Too much of anything, even something as tasty as ice cream can turn into a dangerous addiction.

  6. I would say that it is possible for something to become an addiction even if there is no chemical dependency to the addiction. However, I would say that there is somewhat of a natural chemical dependency to this example because of the dopamine that is sent to the brain when ice cream is consumed. There is not any positive effects from having an ice cream addiction, but there are a lot of negative effects. One of the negative effects is that ice cream is not a nutritious food so it could lead to an unhealthy lifestyle. I think that people around someone who is addicted to ice cream would not be hurt like those around a drug addict because they would not see the addict destroying their life every day. I would say that the difference between liking something a lot and becoming addicted to it is that it becomes an addiction once it controls someone's life. If it is the only thing that their life revolves around then that is an addiction, but if it is just something that they enjoy doing or brings them joy then that is not an addiction.

  7. I think it just seems like an addiciton because of the addiction like feelings. There is no chemical dependence and craving something is just a feeling. I think it's more of an obsession and want for the ice cream just because they like it a lot, just as anyone does. If it were to be classified as an addiction, the only negative effect would be that it would be extremely harmful to your health by obvious weight gain. Aside from that though, i don't think there would be many negative consequences as far as relations with family and other people that are trying to help them.

I definitely think that anything that is pleasurable can eventually turn into in addiction because that's how all addictions start. However, I don't think that some things can become a full-on addiction. As I said before, there is no chemical dependency to an ice cream 'addiciton' because it seems to be just an infatuation with ice cream. Sure, it gives a happy feeling which could be connected to the release of endorphins, but i don't think endorphins are released to the great extent that say drugs and alcohols release the chemical.

As far as the line between what is an addiction and what is not, I think in a sense it is about how harmful the addiction is. I think it depends a lot on how the object effects you and the certain extent to which certain chemicals are released in the brain when abusing something. An addiction is an addiction no matter what it is though. An adrenaline addiction is just as harmful as a coke addiction. They both effect peer relationships and daily functions even it they may be to different extents.

  8. I think that there is no chemicals in ice cream that can make one actually addicted, and if there is such thing, then it is not a true addiction since I do not believe anyone can be truly addicted to ice cream.

The only negative things I can think of are weight gain and loss of money. The more you eat it, the more calories that are being added daily, and the more they eat it, the more money they spend on it.

Besides having pleasure, the only other positive I can think of is getting your daily fill or dairy and calcium i guess. I am not too positive about what positives can come from eating ice cream all the time.

Besides the grocery bill that may accumulate, I do not think that the actual ice cream addiction would affect people around the addict as much as drugs and/or alcohol do. The bill however may lead to relationship trouble which would then be troubling to people around them.

Anything in the world is available to become an addiction. Whether it is sex, food, or drugs, it can be an addiction. However, as said previously, there are some things that are not an actual addiction, just something someone finds an emotional attachment to.

  9. I do not think a person can be addicted to ice cream because there are no addictive qualities to it, alcohol and cigarettes have those qualities and even extreme sports have addictive qualities. If it was classified as an addiction, I believe negative side affects could be malnutrition and obesity. I do not think there are positive affects to ice cream. I do not think ice cream can harm close ones to the addicted person, you cannot get second hand ice cream. I think anything pleasurable has the potential to be addictive because you want to feel good things. The line between addiction and not addiction is when you cannot stop yourself from addiction, like when you have to drink or have to smoke because your brain tells you to. There can be good addictions, so I do not think something is addictive because it is harmful.

  10. Although it may seem that a person may be connected to ice cream through feelings or cravings I do not think that there is such thing as an ice cream addiction. There is no chemical dependance on anything in ice cream except for the fact that when the person eats it, the brain releases dopamine. Negative consequences of eating too much ice cream would be severe weight gain and sickness due to lack of nutrients from other foods. Nothing positive could come out of being addicted to such a sugary, fattening food. I think it could definitely affect the person's family because ice cream obviously costs money so if the person is spending all his or her family's money on ice cream, the family will obviously be affected. Only things with a chemical component can actually become addictions, everything else are just really bad habits. Just because someone does something very frequently doesn't mean its an addiction unless it has a chemical component that bounds that person to an addiction.

  11. I think someone cannot actually be addicted to ice cream. One of the defining parts of an addiction is that it harms not just the user, but those around them. I don't see how eating ice cream could hurt the people around the user. In the article it mentioned how those who eat more gain less pleasure from eating it. That's the same concept for almost everything. Anything you do more often, becomes less pleasurable. I really can't see ice cream itself being the addiction, but maybe pleasure being the addiction. Ice cream can make you fat if you eat too much, but that and minor health concerns are probably all that will come from eating ice cream. I don't believe anything can be addictive because not all things are harmful enough. There's a thin line between what is harmful and what is not, but I don't believe ice cream is harmful.

  12. I would say that it does have chemical attributes to it. The passage describes how the ice cream can set off chemical signals in the brain that lead to addictive like traits. The ice cream can affect the same receptors in the same way as an addictive drug can. Obesity is a possible negative consequence of this. Eating too much ice cream and/or sugar in general can cause an increase in weight and make a person become unhealthy. I mean one "positive" could be an increase in the person's calcium intake, but that is kind of a different side effect. The negatives of this would far outweigh the positives. I do believe that anything pleasurable had the ability to become addictive. That is almost a given. I would say the line between an addiction and a non-addiction, would have to be whether or not the person can live without it and go without the source for a few days. If they can't, I believe it may be an addiction.

  13. There seems to be a chemical depence associated with ice cream and other comfort food. Some foods do affect how a person feels. For example lavender tea calms a person and eating turkey makes a person more sleepy. An ice cream addiction is like other addictions and there are negative consequences. Ice cream is very unhealthy; when consumed in large quantity it can be detrimental to the body. An ice cream addiction is not as severe as a drug or alcohol addiction because the consequences takes longer to develop. A person could die if they overdose on drugs. The consequences of ice cream usually comes later on in life. I think it becomes an addiction when something becomes un controllable.

  14. From my point of view, addiction can be both psychological and physical. For example, gambling which can cause addiction in psychological and drugs can cause addiction on physical. If we claim like to eating cream as an addiction, the negative thing would happen is getting fat and have a bad lifestyle. As for the positive thing with the ice cream addiction, I think it would be its good taste. When I eat ice cream, I always feels a kind of pressure. This is may be the positive thing of ice cream addiction. I don’t think that ice cream addiction could harm anyone close to the addict because eat ice cream is not like taking drug. I think anything pleasurable could make people like to do it, in other words, addictive. From my point of view, the definition of addiction should take two factors into consideration; the first factor is if it is good for individuals, the second factors is that if is a physical dependence. I think the stuff that could harm to individuals could be defined in to addiction easier that the stuff that don’t harm to individuals.

  15. I think when people eat ice cream in order to cover up depression they are connecting eating ice cream to that depressed feeling, so when ever they are depressed they resort to ice cream. This connection causes the disorder not a chemical dependence. I think the negative consequences are obvious; there is an apparent health risk when you eat that much ice cream and if it is a common occurrence you will gain a lot of weight. When you gain a lot of weight then that increases your chance of being depressed, so it causes a downward spiral of weight gain and depression. I doubt that there are any positives to eating ice cream when you are depressed. I think that it is possible that you can affect those around you if you have an ice cream addiction because like any other addiction there are issues that also affect those around you.
I think it is possible to be addicted to almost anything as long as it gives you a feeling that you consider pleasurable and I think that ice cream exemplifies that idea. I think that an addiction has an negative effect to it, so if there are no negative effects to a habit then it should not be considered a addiction.
